Lacey Jones

1) What got you started playing poker?

Lacey Jones: I started playing poker as a little kid. I played a lot in

high school and college with all the frat boys and used to take all of their money.

I played in an ESPN tournament last year when I was hired as a model to be in there, but I

played really well so I was approached by Absolute Poker. They had me start working

with Mark Seif and reading about a whole bunch of different strategies and plays and

now I’m here at the World Series of Poker. My favorite thing about the game is that

it reminds me of being around my family. I’ve lost a lot of family memebers, so it’s just that nostalgic feeling that I love. I also really enjoy being around a bunch of

people socializing and it’s just a great game.

2) Who has been the toughest opponent that you have faced?

Lacey Jones: I think John Phan. We played in a Palms tournament together and you just never knew what he had. He was very aggressive and I like to be aggressive too but if someone else is being aggressive with you you need to try and figure out how you want to change your game. So it was a little bit difficult when you have to do that. But I think next time I can put some plays on him.

3) Are there any players out there that you seem to beat consistently?

Lacey Jones:I’ve been able to put a lot of bluffs on a lot of the boys. It is usually pretty easy to execute. I think that most guys just underestimate how women can play and they think that whenever you are raising you always have a hand, which isn’t always the case. It is nice to always keep them guessing.

4) Do you use your sex appeal to you advantage at the table?

Lacey Jones: Always. Always. I always use a nice smile and look at them and cock my head a little bit to the side. I try and make them feel a little bit bad if they do call me and knock me out. Usually they like to fold.

5) You are a model in addition to being a poker player, what advice do you have for some of the more fashion challenged poker players?

Lacey Jones:Wear some deodorant, take a shower, and a haircut every now and then is nice. You just have to be comfortable, but put yourself together and make a better appearance. If people see you as unkept and think that you are a reckless player they are going to play against you a certain way. So if you clean up a little bit you may be able to throw them off so they can’t pinpoint what kind of player you are.

6) Do you gamble outside of poker?

Lacey Jones: I used to play blackjack, I’m really good. I like to count cards, but dont tell anyone because occasionally I like to hit the tables. But, I pretty much swore it off, especially during the World Series of Poker. I swore off drinking as well during the series to maintain focus just on poker. I think when you go outside for other gambling outlets, like roulette, poker, and blackjack, it just takes away from your poker game or bankroll for poker. Its just not the right play, you just need to focus on what is really important and with poker you have much more control over the situation, there is more strategy involved and it is much more about you and the cards. With blackjack it is kinda just what happens happens.

7) Do you think that the vegas partying lifestyle has an impact on poker tournaments or players?

Lacey Jones: I would say yes, because some of these guys stay out til 3 or 4 in the morning, then go play a tournament at noon after drinking all night, but it may be better for them because they zone out and they are not so focused and it is harder to read them. Whenever you are doing so much to your body your mind isn’t going to be working as well as it should be. If you are not drinking and you are taking care of yourself, exercising being healthy, mentally staying focused then you are going to be a better player and you are going to have a sharper edge over everyone else.

8) What do you like to do outside of poker?

Lacey Jones: I love being around good friends and family and enjoying the moment. Life is so special, but we all have lives that we tend to take for granted. Every moment counts so we have to live the moment and enjoy every second of it, if you don’t you are missing out on the whole world.

9) What is something about you that may surprise fans or people that you play with?

Lacey Jones: I’m a nerd. I’m a complete nerd. I love reading books on quantum physics and I love just reading all of the time. In college I didnt join a sorority or anything like that I was a library rat and stayed in most of the time. I want to go to law school, but a lot of people think that I’m just a dumb blonde model, but I actually have a brain and can outthink a lot of people.

10) Who has had the biggest influence on who you are today?

Lacey Jones: My mom of course. She raised me and my little sister all on her own. My dad left when I was about 7 and she was struggling with breast cancer this whole time. She’s just one of the strongest people I know. She never gave up. And That’s what taught me to never give up and just keep going with what you love and do what you need to do. If it doesn’t work out it then it doesn’t work out, but there is a plan or path for everyone that we all have to follow and we just can’t give up.
