Brandi Hawbaker - 10 Questions
1) If you could have success in something outside of poker, what would it be? Brandi Hawbaker: I did acting for a little bit before I started traveling. I didn't really know if it was for me. It was a lot of fun and I loved it, but it seemed like such a shallow industry to be in. I took about 6 years off and just traveled around the world and kinda found myself. I did a lot of backpacking and I got back to the states last year. I've travelled to 39 countries by myself now, and I'm only 24. I love what I'm doing [poker]. I love the fact that I can use my mind to outsmart my opponents. That's a big thing. Even though I liked acting, and singing, and modeling and all of the things that I did in the past this is something that I get more gratification from, just being able to use my brain instead of my looks. 1b)Well can't you use your looks in poker? Brandi Hawbaker: of course baby, all is fair in love and poker. As bad as this sounds, and I know it sounds bad when celebrities and stuff say this in interviews, but I really don't feel sexy. I just feel like me. I wake up in the morning and I'm just me. I'm in my own skin and I like who I am and I expect that other people like me. 2) How'd you get your start in poker? Brandi Hawbaker:I played a single table satellite which was a tournament for an instructional poker dvd with Phil Gordon, Carlos Mortenson, Antonio Esfandiari, among a few other local Vegas celebrities. I ended up winning the whole entire thing so I have a few hours of dvd time of me just kicking ass. Although I did make one bad call since I was so new in the game against Phil Gordon. I was in the small blind with Ace 10 suited and he pushed all in and I called it. He actually had Ace Queen suited and I got a little lucky on him and crippled him. I don't make bad calls like that anymore. Especially against those guys. That's where Carlos and I met and he's a great guy. He's a really good guy. He's a really good friend. He's a friend. He's a friend that I have a massive crush on. Just a friend. 3) Who's been the toughest person that you've played against? Brandi Hawbaker: Carlos [Mortenson], he always seems to know when I'm bluffing. 4) Who's number do you have at the tables? Brandi Hawbaker: Sam Grizzle for sure, I outplay him every time. He just like feeds me his chips. Dan Harrington, I stole his blinds at Festa only because I read his first book and know how he plays. Allen Goehring I made some moves on and I was kinda like woot hoot about that.
5) Who would you choose to be a major final table with you?Brandi Hawbaker: Roland de Wolfe, Carlos although he'd be so distracting, Dutch sure why not, Annie Duke - I've wanted to play against her since I first started playing poker. Phil Ivey. Allen Cunningham. I'd love to play Phil Gordon again and make a better call on him and Antonio just so I can prove that I can kick his ass one more time. 6) What's the craziest bet that you've made outside of poker? Brandi Hawbaker:I did the second highest bungee jump in the entire world naked. But, usually I like to keep my betting on the table, especially because I'm dressed like this today because I lost a bet. 7) What would you do if you had a million dollars and nothing to do for a month? Brandi Hawbaker: Well the first million, when I make it. I'm going to think positively here. The first one to two million I'm probably going to invest. That way I can live off the money for quite a few years and just take out a few thousand every month. But, with the third million dollars my dream is to buy a boat and just go around the world on the boat. Host poker parties, teach people how to scuba dive. I'm a dive master with Patty certified, so I love to go scuba diving and I love being on the ocean with the wind in my face and fish for my own food. I do spearfishing. I'm kind of an adrenaline junkie.
8) what do you like to do outside of poker?
Brandi Hawbaker: I firespin. I love going in the desert and firespinning. I have these big kevlar wicks that are on the end of chains and I spin them around and try not to get burned. I love to snowboard. I bungie jump. I am an avid book reader. I read a lot. I've actually never owned a television in my life because I just love to read. I love to travel I guess that's it. My goal is to go to Antarctica, that way I can say that I've been to all seven continents around the world. I want to go to Gabona Africa, the Islands of Santa May. Argentina to go diving with the great big whales although it is illegal so you have to kind of sneak in. Not that I am unaccustomed to doing things illegal. I've snuck into Cuba three times. 9) Where has been your favorite place that you have visited? Brandi Hawbaker: Probably New Zealand although it brings back bad memories because I was so in love with someone that I moved halfway around the world with nothing. I sold off all of my belongings, moved halfway around the world for someone that ended up breaking my heart, but I would do it all over again if I had to. I love that passion and that feeling of being in love. I'm really picky, and even though I get a lot of attention from poker guys, I just kinda hold out for the one that makes things special and exciting. 10) What is something about you that would surprise most people? Brandi Hawbaker: I'm pretty much an open book. I was one of the finalists for miss teen Nebraska way back in the day. I was president of the science club. So I've always been somewhat of a mental dork in my own sorta way. So being here with a whole bunch of dorky poker guys is completely the same as being the president of science club because I was the only girl in science club as well. I modeled back then as well, I think that's probably why they voted me president. 11) And what do you think about having such a following on an internet forum and what is your message to everyone that knows you from there? Brandi Hawbaker: Sometimes the negativity gets me down to be completely honest. I'm not used to that. I have a lot of friends. That's the one thing that I've been blessed with in life. And I have friends all of the world. I have a great support system in Los Angeles. Just filled with really really good people. It's kinda weird when someone doesn't like me. It doesn't happen. Everybody who meets me likes me. Sometimes I'm a little goofy and I can be annoying or something. But, there's not very many people that I've ever met that honestly hate me or dislike me. I've always make friends easily. So people saying stuff, I just figure that they don't know me or they have their own issues to resolve. I think it's fun. It's kinda funny the responses you get back. I thought that it was really neat that so many people were rooting for me and so many had good things to say and were just cheering me on. I thought hey that's pretty cool. So I've managed to answer (except for the really really grotesque ones) every single private message that I've gotten. Just because I think it's cool to have that support. I don't feel like I'm above anything or that someone is not worth my time. If someone takes the time to write me I can definitely find the time to send back a response.
