Poker Terms
Aces Up/Aces Over: Two pair, a pair of aces and another pair.
Action: A players opportunity to act. When it is a player’s turn it is said the “action” is to him/her.
Also, action can describe when there are a lot of bets and raises during a hand.
Active Player: A player still in the hand.
All Blue: A spades or clubs flush.
All Pink: A hearts or diamonds flush.
All-In: To put all of your money at the table into the pot.
American Airlines: A pocket pair of Aces.
Ante: A bet contributed by each player to start the pot before each hand is dealt.
Back Door: To make a hand late that you weren’t necessarily drawing at.
Back Raise: A Reraise.
Back to Back: 1. Two of the same cards in a row, either rank or suit. 2. A term for winning 2
tournaments in a row or two years in a row (ex. He was a back to back champion of the WSOP).
Bad Beat: When a hand with a high winning percentage is beat by a much lower hand
Bankroll: The total amount of money a player has to gamble with.
Barn: A nickname for full house (full barn).
Beer Hand: A nickname for 7-2 starting hand in Texas Hold’em.
Belly Buster: An inside straight draw (also gutshot).
Bet: Putting money or chips into the pot.
Bicycle: The best low hand, a straight of A-2-3-4-5 (also wheel).
Big Blind: A forced bet put in before the cards are dealt. Typically the big blind is 2 seats to the
left of the button (dealer).
Big Bobtail: An open ended straight flush hand.
Big Chick: Nickname for A-Q starting hand in Texas HOld’em.
Big Slick: Nickname for A-K starting hand in Texas Hold’em.
Blank: A card that doesn’t add value to a player’s hand.
BLind: A forced bet put in before the cards are dealt. Typically the blinds start to the left of the
button (dealer).
Blind Game: A game that includes blind bets.
Bluff: A bet or raise from a player who knows that their hand is not likely to win to make other
players fold.
Board: 1. The community cards in Texas Hold’em. 2. The list of players waiting for seats at the
poker table.
Boat: Nickname for a full house, short for full boat.
Bot: Short for robot, an online computer program that plays poker hands.
Bottom Pair: The lowest pair that you can make given the community cards.
Boxed Card: A card that is turned face up in the deck
Broadway: Ace high straight
Broken Game: A game that doesn’t have players anymore
Bubble: When the players left in the tournament are close to finishing in the money, they are
referred to as “on the bubble.”
Bullet[s]: Ace[s].
Bump: To raise the pot.
Burn: To discard the top card from the deck face down prior to dealing.
Button: A chip or token placed in front of the player to indicate dealer position.
Buy: To bet enough to make others fold.
Buy-In: The amount of money required to play in a game.
Buy the button: To pay the big blind and small blind when joining a table so that the button doesn’t
skip you.
