Poker Odds
When the average card player sits down at a computer or a poker table to enjoy a few hands of Omaha or 7-Card Stud, he or she is probably not too concerned with calculating the poker odds. Most people think of poker as a pleasant diversion and nothing more. However, there are some who take a much more disciplined approach to the game, either in a concerted effort to win money or simply because thats how they were taught to play.
Choosing your level of comfort
For this type of serious player, poker odds can be of the greatest importance. But even if you are only interested in playing for the sheer fun of it, it might not be a bad idea to familiarize yourself with some basic facts concerning poker odds. So lets take a look at a few.
The first thing you need to know is that there are three distinct kinds of poker odds. The most fundamental of these are the card odds, which are no more than the probabilities of being dealt or drawing various hands. Most seasoned players base their playing and betting decisions on the Card Odds to some degree or another. There are 2,598,960 different poker hands in a fifty-two-card deck. That’s a lot of different hands to keep track of!
Matching odds against odds
Many poker experts will tell you, however, that the card odds lose much of their value when the Investment Odds are not factored into the equation. This type of poker odds can be defined as the estimated returns on the money that is bet. The determination of the Investment Odds is not a strictly mathematical problem. Intuition plays a major role here, as well.
Finally, there are the edge odds, which are reached by taking an assessment of the performance of an opponent sitting in the game with you. This is considered a longer-term form of calculating poker odds, one which can only be effectively applied after a minimum of ten hands have been played. It takes at least that long for a player’s betting habits to be assessed, and solid odds drawn from that assessment.
