How to Use Implied Odds in a Poker Tournament
Implied odds are another tool that poker players can use in a poker tournament to determine if it is worth staying in a hand, or if it would be better if they folded out. Calculating implied odds is not as easy as other odds formulas because they take into consideration relative and dependent factors instead of concrete factors. To calculate implied odds for a certain hand the player needs to determine the correlation between the values of the poker hand that they are holding to the possible hands that their opponents could have. This means that the player needs to first know the outs for their hands, and then they need to quickly figure out the other possible hands that could be made with the revealed community cards.
Making better decisions
Implied odds can be used for many different things in a poker tournament. The first thing that they can be used for is to help a player decide what type of action they should take. If their implied odds are good for winning a hand then they can use this information to check-raise, or to try and trap their opponents into adding more value to the pot. On the other hand if their implied odds are bad, then they can use this information to either try for a bluff or to fold their hand and minimize their loss. If the implied odds fall somewhere in the middle, then the player may use this information to fold or to semi-bluff.
The second way that implied odds can be used in a poker tournament is to bluff. If the player calculates their implied odds and sees that they don't have a good chance at winning the hand they may see what other higher valued hands can be made, compare this against how their opponents are betting and then decide to proceed like they have made the nut hand for the round. For example if the flop came down Ah-Kd-9h and the other players have either only checked, called, or folded, then the player using implied odds can enter the round with a check-raise pretending that they have at least the top pair or better in the hopes that the other players will fold out or they will have a worse hand then the betting player does.
Learning more about odds
If a poker player is still not sure what implied odds are then it is highly recommended that they sit through one of the interactive tutorials offered by an online poker room. These tutorials often include examples, and step by step instructions about how to calculate various poker odds and how to apply them to real poker situations. If this topic is still not clear, then an instructional video may be more helpful. However, the best way to learn this skill is to simply do it yourself. The more you practice calculating implied odds the better you will be at it, and the faster you will be able to do it. Soon it will become like second nature.
