2 - $6,102,499
3 - $4,123,310
4 - $3,628,513
5 - $3,216,182

These numbers prove that the talk of the demise of poker was premature. In addition, this payday is for just two weeks of work and would come out to over $300 million annually! Compare that the to the top 10 earning American athletes per year and it becomes obvious that poker is not dead. Tiger Woods $86.4 million
Phil Mickelson $45.9 million
Shaquille O'Neal $34 million
Kobe Bryant $33.7 million
Carson Palmer $31.6 million
LeBron James $28.6 million

8/1/2006
The no-limit hold'em main event of the 2006 World Series of Poker is under way with a record 8,773 entrants and a prize pool of over $80 million dollars. For the results of the earlier tournaments click here and to find out the real deal about the the 2006 WSOP read on.

The list of notables that didn't make it through day 1 of the main event include: Michael "the Grinder" Mizrachi, Phil Hellmuth, Doyle Brunson, Lyle Berman, Erick Lindgren, Patrik Antonius, David Benyamine, Phil Gordon, Bob Stupak, Mike "the mouth" Matusow, Paul Darden, actors Shannon Elizabeth and Brad Garret, porn star Ron "the hedgehog" Jeremy, Gus Hansen, Max Pescatori, Bill Elder, Ryan Gentry, Sam Grizzle, Lennox Lewis, Dean Cane, Sean Sheikhan, Erik Seidel, Amnon Filippi, Victor Ramdin and many more...

Many big poker stories made the headlines leading up the main event this year. None bigger than 21 year-old Jeff Madsen winning two bracelets and making two other final tables becoming the youngest winner and two-time winner in WSOP history. Also, Phil Hellmuth won his record tying 10th bracelet at his 3rd final table of the 2006 WSOP, and then broke another record by ordering 30 bottles of Dom Perignon to the suite to celebrate.

But, many of the great accomplishments at the tables in this year's WSOP have been overshadowed by issues with management. Harrah's had problems with a lack of security for patrons, dealer walk-outs over short paychecks, changing tournament structures without notifying the players, penalizing players for complaining after discovering old marked decks in play and then failing to take the marked cards off the tables.

I also had problems with management trying to obtain media credentials for the 2006 WSOP even though I went through all of the proper channels well in advance. The WSOP or Harrah's repeatedly denied my requests for media credentials despite the fact that I've had them at WSOP and WPT events for more than a year. An example of one of the denials:

"Your request to receive a WSOP media credential remains denied. The media credential only grants you access to a very crowded media room and under the ropes for photography which you don't need. Thanks."

Yep, just like in the commercial, Harrah's cares. At least google thinks Pokulator is media because this page comes up #2 when searching for 2006 WSOP updates pleasing me more than the WSOP's official media credentials could.

Rumor has it that the media check-in room has very limited hours of operation because the guy in charge, Dave Curley is extremely busy with his other responsibilities at the Rio. The two girls with the giant margaritas didn't seem to be too impressed by him, and neither was I.

Lacking official 2006 WSOP media credentials I got kicked out of the tournament room 3 out of the 10 or 15 times that I stopped by this week. I just wanted to take some pictures for the website, and check up on a few friends in the tournament room (I had 1.25% of one of them). While being kicked out I wondered why if they cared so much about having extra people in the room they allowed it be so easy to gain entrance? I also wondered why security spent time stopping fans and media from watching the tournament instead of protecting their patrons in the parking lot when so much money was coming in and out of the Rio each day? Apparently security did stop one spirited old lady from gaining access to the tournament room and later she confessed to Jesse Jones and I that she unsuccessfully lied about feeling faint in order to get by. Jesse gave her a stern look, but i wanted to fill her in on:

my top 3 tips to get into the tournament room during during the day 1 madness:

1. Blend in with players rushing back from a break.
2. Convince the security lady that you are a player who hadn't been given a table number or player's card.
(yes, there were problems with the security at the Rio)
3. Use a media pass from the 2005 WSOP, or any other event.

Yesterday Mike "the Mouth" Matusow could be heard all the way down the hall selling bobbleheads, t-shirts, and hats. He had just been busted out of the main event and when we bought this one of a kind bobblehead future ebay auction #9999 for Mike Matusow in a Phil Hellmuth box he said, "I'm broke! I need to sell this stuff to make back my entry fee."

Hmmm, I bought these x-ray glasses for poker but they sure do come in handy now.

After being with Sunny Leone for a just a few minutes even Mike Caro's hair began sticking up more than usual!

John Spadavecchia and I shake as we bet on who has more real hair on his head.

Fucking poker players.

Rumor has it that party poker spent 1.7 million on their party at Studio 54 at the MGM last night. We skipped it and had a poker tournament in our room. Then we launched a new site that will show the top stories in poker as decided by the users. Check out Pokunews and let everyone know what you think is important.

Here is another shot of Sunny Leonne and her friend. Is the wet spot on my shirt from the pool or because I was too excited to be in this adult model sandwich?

Chris Moneymaker played battleship (heads up poker on two laptops) against Greg Raymer at the Poker Stars booth at the expo.

NBA basketball stars Michael Finley and Nick Van Excel showed up at the expo to play some of the fans in poker.
7/29

The first day 1 has concluded and many of the big name pros weren't able to make it out. Michael "the Grinder" Mizrachi, David Benyamine, Gus Hanson, Dutch Boyd, and Jean Gluck just to name a few. Paul Macaffry and Mark Vos were the two chip leaders after day 1a and now they have 4 days to wait until they get back into the action.

The WSOP party at the Rio last night featured more body painted girls, more free drinks, and a nice lipsynched performance by Rhianna. The wind was gusting on the two outdoor patios at Voodoo in the Rio and drinks were flying everywhere.

Poker phenom Jeff Madsen has signed with Poker Royalty and will announce a deal with Full-Tilt poker soon.

7/28

The main event begins today with the goal of many people goal being just to survive day 1.

Last night in the Tower Ballroom at Bellagio there was a big party for Doyle's Room featuring about 200 Doyle's Dollys wearing cowboy hats and short jean skirts or shorts. There was also two mechanical bulls, free drinks, and bad music.

After Doyle's party they handed out free passes to Light at Bellagio, but the bouncers were jerks and insisted that we still tip them $20 a person to get in so we headed to Tao at the Venetian to try and find Sunny Leone again (see pics below if you don't know why).

7/27
Sunny Leone is working at the booth with Live at the Bike promoting a new adult poker site.

and another

Pete Rose is at the expo signing autographs and possibly scouting out an online casino to work with in the future. Did anyone hear if the Reds won?

Betus.com has the most models at the expo and poker pro Ryan Gentry seems happy to meet them.

The expo kicks off today and and there is no shortage of things to see. Bodog has gone all out again and has an upstairs loft complete with bed and girls in lingerie for photo ops. You can also see every poker company pushing their products and the latest innovations in poker

The satelitte area is packed with people trying to lock up their seats to the main event beginning tomorrow.

Tonight's party is for Doyle's Room at the Bellagio and featured guests are rumored to be Pamela Anderson, Paris and Nikki Hilton, and Brad Garrett.

7/26
David Williams was playing Daniel Alaei heads up in the no limit 2-7 lowball draw event and Evelyn Ng was on the mic doing the play by play. She should be hired to do this more often.

There was controversy in one of the satelittes tonight when two of the players were accused of passing chips to the short stack in order to not be bubbled out. In the end everyone won their main event seats and the chip passers finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Full-Tilt rented out Pure at Ceasers and put on a great party. They had the PussyCat Dolls perform and had a celebrity tournament. Jose Canseco made an appearance and ended up going for a triple play taking three beauties out the door with him.

Played a $10 tournament at a buddy's place with two poker pros, Ellix Powers and Ryan Gentry. Ellix is famous for his line "you called me with jack high!" on ESPN's broadcast of the 2004 WSOP. We had a last longer as well and i went out first in the first tournament but then took down the second winning $4 from the pros for the last longer and the $60 prize. Too bad blackjack was invented or else i would still have some of that money. Stick to poker!

Jeff Madsen was 4th in chips at his 4th final table of his first world series of poker. Amazing. This picture was taken with a cell phone camera because Harrah's banned the other camera for being "too big."

The 1,500 NL event continues today with just over 150 people left and everyone is in the money.

I noticed Eric from Bluff magazine and Jeff from Camp Hellmuth both made it to day 2.

Pamela Anderson is making an appearance today at the hospitality suite of Doyle's Room to promote her new poker "skin." She recently married Kid Rock and previously announced that she had Hep C so if you play on her site make sure you use virus protection.

Word is that Bodog party was fun last night at Tao in the Venetian with people dressed up in all sorts of outfits and bodypaint. Tonight Full Tilt is having a party at Pure in Ceasers featuring a celebrity tournament.

7/25
Hellmuth won the rebuy event and his record trying 10th bracelet. He's been making final tables all over the place and finally got the coveted bracelet to tie him with Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan. Afterwards he made a speech to the crowd and then ordered 30 bottles of Dom Perignon to the UB hospitality suite and partied all night.

Bodog had to cancel its marketing conference scheduled to start today because of fears that everyone attending would be arrested after the US government snagged the CEO of betonsports.com last week at the airport on his way to costa rica. But, bodog made up for cancelling their conference by giving out playing cards that you can exchange for free drinks when visiting their hospitality suite. What makes it even better is that the cards they are passing out are the same decks that bodog gave out as giveaways last year at the WSOP. So, I was lucky enough to bring my deck from last year to play poker in the room, and now i have 52 drink tickets at the suite. Updates may get a little crazy soon!

The two girls with the giant margaritas didn't seem to be too impressed by him, and either was I.
