The ongoing Ellix Powers saga part eight
Ellix called me up last night to tell me that Smith, the guy who runs his school in LA, had gotten in to town, and that he was backing Ellix in a 20/40 game. I told him I was on my way to play beer pong at the Aladdin, but that I would meet him up today. When I called him around 3, he was already at the Rio, and I headed over. I surveyed the convention center floor and found him next sitting at an empty satellite table. We said our hellos, then I asked him how it went last night, and he said “I just about broke even, but I’m tying to get into tomorrow’s event. 5000 dollar stud, stud is one of my best games.” He went on to say that Smith was a great guy, and “he really takes care of me. Look at what he gave me.” He dug into a jacket pocket and produced a Ziploc bag with a bracelet inside. He opened up the Ziploc and showed me a silver bracelet with diamonds across it. “Pretty nice, white gold. I figure I can get three grand for it, what do you think? I aint a jeweler, but at least twenty five hundred right?” I laughed and said I wasn’t a jeweler either, he put the bracelet back in its sandwich bag and eyed Smith shiftily.
We got to talking about my job in the mortgage business, and he said “Real estate is some good shit, I made a lot of money in real estate”. I asked him where he made his money and he elaborated, “I used to buy houses cheap. Buy em for like 40 grand when they were worth 70.” “How did you get the money to put up” “I didn’t have to put up anything, the bank did all that shit. I would find motivated sellers, the land would appraise at like 70 grand, I would offer like 48 but I would cover closing costs, and they would bite. Bank would give me like 6-7 grand right then, and I would just flip it in a couple months.” “How did you have the credit to get a loan.” “Shit it wasn’t me, it was my wife.” “You were married?” “Yeah, for like a year, she was an FBI agent.” “You were married to an FBI agent?” “Well, she wasn’t in the field or some shit, she just ran background checks. Shit, she partied more than me. Smoked, did the whole deal. We fucking partied.” “So how did that end?” “She did something wrong. I forget what, but she was out of line.”
I went off to my 4-8 game while Ellix went up to Smith’s room to take a nap. While I never inquired as to the whereabouts of my 80 bucks, I did figure out a lot of background information. Most notably, Ellix is selling a gift from his employer for profit, Ellix was at the forefront of many successful real estate scams, and Ellix convinced an FBI agent to marry him until he decided she had done something wrong. This man is forever my hero.
