Another big Main Event first day at the 2006 World Series of Poker. Day 1-C saw the poker room jammed to capacity with players and spectators. The corridors outside the huge WSOP poker room is a sea of human gridlock during the breaks. Long lines continue to flow out of the men’s rooms and into the crowded corridor. The temporary WSOP gift shop is the most convenient place to buy a quick snack; but, the single cashier is always overwhelmed by the sudden mass of rushing poker players on a short time clock. I love the WSOP and all of its inconveniences and I’ll miss it when its over.

Too soon this will all be a collection of memories with the Rio Resort will return to normal as just the loudest, funnest, all party all the time joints in all of Las Vegas. Traffic jams on Flamingo Road won’t last as long, overflow parking will be empty, the crowded corridors become lifeless conduits, and it is so quiet you can hear a chip drop two joints over. That heady fragrance of money will have been replaced with the antiseptic smell of corporate clean. I always come back to the Pavilion Center after the big poker show has left the building, just to stroll around and take a final measure of the long gone poker circus. It always proves to be what I need to fit everything together, the last page in the 2006 WSOP book.

Hard time knowing who the fish are? Those guesswork days will be gone forever if a new WSOP rule is adopted that requires all rookies to wear a fish hat.
