Las Vegas Booming, Alien Workers Protesting, Poker At Caesars

Spring day in Las Vegas.

Spring day in Las Vegas.

Hanging out in Vegas on a lazy Saturday afternoon with weather so nice the Boulder hookers are strutting down the boulevard in loincloths and thongs. Thousands of visitors crowding the streets, sidewalks, casinos and hotels while soaking up the party atmosphere that pervades every corner of the city of eternal action, hypnotic neon, bare skin, and free beer. The Vegas economy is continuing to track upward with gaming profits rising, occupancy rates staying in the high nineties and retail shops beating last years quarterly profits. I’ve often alluded to the isolated Las Vegas economy that resides more in the sunlight of the world than the shadows of the stalled US econo system. Even with three dollar gasoline Vegas continues to set records for the millions of visitors choosing to vacation here. Same reason I don’t subscribe to any of the bubble burst theories including the real estate boom. Housing prices in the valley continue upward while proposed high rise condo projects continue to be announced. The serious, well funded condo projects are a quick sell out. Yea, every day is a great day to hang out in this town and it never closes, always open.

If you’re planning to be in Vegas on Monday, May 1, it might be a good idea to brush up on your housekeeping since some or all of the forty percent of the strip resort’s workforce may be out in the street taking part in the immigration protest. Most of the resorts have floated down rumors saying anyone staying away from the job on Monday will be fired, but can they really do that? Canning forty percent of your work force appears to create a much bigger business problem than a few unmade beds, un-vacuumed floors and uncooked coffee shop food on only one day. Replacing all of the thousands of workers that might stay home Monday is a very long term ordeal. Maybe the rest of the country can live without the alien workers but I’m not sure Las Vegas can. Deporting such a large percentage of hospitality industry workers will have a huge impact on the booming economic climate of the gambling Mecca.

Everywhere, gaggles of construction cranes.

Let the people that work the hardest and receive the least take a day to demonstrate they are just human beings and rather peaceful ones at that. They go about their business in a civilized manner, pay their taxes and dream the great American dream of opportunity just like everyone else. What will probably come of this Hispanic protest against becoming political pawns for an administration that welcomes any distractions taking attention away from the disaster in Iraq during this election year? Nothing, at least for the protestors. The only possible effect it might have on any of us is higher prices for fresh produce. Those clever MBA farmers running the large corporate farms that rely almost entirely on migrant alien farm workers to get the produce to market will be able to justify a price increase. And when John Q Public complains about three dollar lettuce the company spokespersons can simply point at all the alien workers taking an unscheduled day off to protest immigration changes and the resulting lost profits, something they must recover for the stockholders. No different than the very successful pricing model and methods the oil companies have refined to produce more profit in a single quarter than has ever been reported by any business in the recorded history of mankind. I wonder if there is some way to adapt this profit model to a blog? Don’t forget about the WSOIP Circuit tournament at Caesars Palace located center strip LAs Vegas.
