Mostensen makes history with WPT Championship victoryJuan Carlos Mortensen defeated Kirk Morrison heads up to win the 2007 WPT Championship at the Five Star World Poker Classic. With the victory, Mortensen received almost $4 million in prize money and became the first player ever to win both the World Series of Poker Main Event and the WPT Championship. Mortensen's victory in the WPT Championship brings his total to four WPT and WSOP championships and over $8 million in career tournament winnings. Mortensen's nickame is "El Matador" but it may need to change to "El Campeón" with all of the impressive championships under his belt. Mortensen vaulted to 7th on the all time tournament money list and only trails Daniel Negreanu in career WPT winnings. Morrison earned just over $2 million for his runner-up finish and tied Negreanu's WPT record of cashing in four consecutive WPT tournaments. Morrison can break the record with a cash in the first event of season six, which will be the WPT's first season on GSN instead of the Travel Channel. The final TV table is set at the WPT Championship Only six players remain at the WPT Championship, led by Paul Lee from Los Angeles with 11.8 million chips. Carlos Mortensen is second with 6.5 million chips and looks to become the first player ever to win the WSOP main event and the WPT Championship. Cirque de Soleil founder Guy Laliberte, and pros Kirk Morrison, Mike Wattel, and Tim Phan also made the final table and hope to win the nearly $4 million first prize. ![]() The chip counts heading into the final table:
I had to take off from Vegas, ashamed, immediately after I was one of the first people knocked out of the media tournament. I had picked up a lot of chips early on, but then my table broke and on my first hand at the new table I was crippled by Ed from Gutshot when I ran my boat into his. So read live updates from him or the wild and crazy guys Matt and Owen at Pokerlistings while I cry by the pool. 27 remain at the WPT Championship Players were eliminated quickly on Day 4 of the WPT Championship and when the dust settled 27 players remained led by Paul Lee with 3.6 million chips. Other notables still left in the field are: Carlos Mortensen, Sorel "Imper1ium" Mizzi, Thomas Wahlroos, Tim Phan , Scott Fischman, Phil Hellmuth, Paul Wasicka, James "Krazy Kanuck" Worth, and Roland de Wolfe. Joe Bartholdi looks to repeat as champion after taking home $3.7 million for his win in the WPT championship last year. At the end of day 1A, Anna Wroblewski was the chipleader continuing her hot streak at the Five Star World Poker Classic after winning the $3,000 NLHE event last week for over $200,000. Worblewski is making quite a name for herself with her small frame, big drinking, and her knack for stacking chips in every tournament that she plays. Wroblewski leads WPT Championship after day 1A
Fresh off of his first WPT win last month, J.C. Tran has run over the competition again in the 3k NL Hold'em event at the Bellagio Five Star World Poker Classic. With this victory, Tran won another $276,000 and continues one of the hottest streaks in poker history. With almost $2.5 Million in tournament winnings so far in 2007, Tran is finally getting the recognition he deserves as one of the top, if not the top tournament player on the circuit. Tran has a big lead for Cardplayer's Player of the year race for 2007 after finishing 3rd in 2006.
